Who is Paul – your Canyoning Guide in Salzburg?

Paul Murray is a state‑certified canyoning guide and outdoor educator in Salzburg. He has over 20 years’ experience working with families, teenagers and companies outdoors, in Austria and abroad.

For him, canyoning isn’t just work – he genuinely loves being outside. He has explored canyons as far away as Oman, and that experience has shaped his style of guiding. On his tours he takes his time, explains things clearly and doesn’t rush, which makes a big difference if you’re new to canyoning or have kids with you.

He also cares about keeping things personal and treating nature with respect, so his groups are intentionally small and never feel like mass tourism. Originally from Ireland, he’s a native English speaker and has spent many years living with his family in the Salzburg region, which makes him a great fit for both local and international visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions about Canyoning

How long is the canyoning voucher valid?

The voucher is valid for 1 year from the date of purchase.

When can I use the voucher?

The season runs from May until the end of September. During this time you can choose any available date.

How do I redeem the voucher?

You can redeem your voucher online by entering the voucher code in the booking calendar.

The balance of a value voucher can be split across several bookings by the same person, until the full amount has been used.

Alternatively, you can arrange a canyoning date directly with Paul via WhatsApp, SMS or phone and simply show him the code.

Do I need to choose a date when I buy the voucher?

No. You don’t choose a date when you buy it. The person receiving the voucher can pick a suitable date later on, in their own time.

Can I change the date if something comes up?

Yes. If there’s a thunderstorm or dangerous high water, Paul will move the tour and arrange a new date with you. If someone is ill or can’t make it, you can also reschedule – just let him know as early as possible, ideally at least 24 hours in advance.

Questions from parents – is canyoning really suitable for children?

In the Almbachklamm near Hallein (Level 1 beginner tour), canyoning can be adapted very well for kids. The pace is gentle, there are lots of alternatives and no compulsory jumps. From around 9 years old the tour works well, as long as the child can swim and is reasonably fit. Some kids are ready at 8, others are still cautious at 12 – you know your child best and can decide whether they’ll enjoy this kind of experience.

Won’t the kids get cold – how are they looked after?

Children get thick wetsuits, and the tour lasts around 2 hours. On the beginner tour you’re not in the water the whole time, and the pace depends on the group. Paul keeps a close eye on how everyone is feeling: if someone starts shivering, looks pale or seems tired, he’ll take a break, give them a little energy boost (like dextrose, gummy bears or chocolate) or shorten the tour if needed. Safety and wellbeing always come first.

Do parents need to join, or can children/teenagers go on their own?

Teenagers under 18 should come with an adult. At least one parent or authorised accompanying adult needs to be there.

Tour level & intensity – which one should I choose?

Could the tour be too intense – is it suitable for my group?

The beginner tour in the Almbachklamm (Level 1) is very versatile and flexible. Jumps are optional, there are always alternative routes, and the difficulty can be adapted to the group. It’s exciting enough for adventure‑lovers and still suitable for families with children.

The sporty tour in the Strubklamm (Level 2) is more demanding: long swimming sections, high rock walls, lots of jumps and about 4 hours in the gorge. Everyone should be fit, able to swim well and not too sensitive to the cold.

The Paradise Tour in the Fischbachklamm (Level 3) is the most challenging option. Good fitness, sure‑footedness and no fear of heights are important. There is roughly a one‑hour hike to the entry point and abseiling sections down waterfalls of up to 30 metres.

You can also take a quick quiz to find out which tour is the best match for you.

Do I need experience for any of the tours?

You don’t need previous experience for any of the tours.
For Level 1, no canyoning experience is required at all.
For Levels 2 and 3, having some experience is helpful, but it’s not a must.

Is canyoning possible if I’m afraid of heights?

Mild fear of heights is usually not a problem on the Level 1 tour, because no jump is mandatory and there are alternative ways down.

For Levels 2 and 3 you really shouldn’t be afraid of heights, as these tours include higher jumps and higher abseil sections.

How safe is canyoning with Paul?

Guided canyoning with good equipment in small groups is very safe – especially when you’re with a state‑certified canyoning guide in Salzburg. Paul has many years of experience and works to clear safety standards, so he can adapt pace, jumps and abseil sections to each group. There’s never a 100% guarantee in any outdoor sport, but if you follow his instructions and behave sensibly, you’re in very safe hands.

How big are the groups?

Paul’s tours run in deliberately small groups of around 2–8 people, depending on the level. That way it never feels like mass tourism and the experience stays personal.

Is canyoning also suitable for larger groups? (school classes, companies or team‑building events)

Yes. For school classes, clubs, company outings and team‑building events, Paul organises private tours just for your group, without mixing you with other guests. Additional guides are brought in as needed, roughly one guide for every 6–8 people. For larger groups, please get in touch with Paul directly – these tours can’t be booked online but are arranged individually to fit your group.

Do the tours also run in the rain?

The beginner tour (Level 1, Almbachklamm) runs in the rain and often even with higher water levels, as long as it’s safe and there are no closures or thunderstorms forecast. This tour is the least weather‑dependent.

The sporty tour (Level 2, Strubklamm) also runs in the rain, but not in thunderstorms or high water.

The Level 3 tour (Fischbachklamm) is the most weather‑dependent and will be postponed in heavy rain, high water or thunderstorms.

Where exactly do Paul’s canyoning tours take place?

There are three gorges in the Salzburg region:

  • Almbachklamm near Hallein, by the Wiestalstausee (Level 1 – beginners & families)
  • Strubklamm near Hallein / Faistenau / Ebenau (Level 2 – sporty)
  • Fischbachklamm near Golling (Level 3 – advanced, with many abseil sections)
What do I need to bring myself?

You only need to bring a few personal items:

  • Swimwear to wear under the wetsuit
  • A towel for after the tour
  • If needed, a glasses strap and any important medication (e.g. asthma spray)
  • Optional: a small bottle of water for after the tour

The wetsuit, helmet, shoes and harness are provided by Paul.

How is the tour day structured?

Start times and exact meeting points depend on the tour, but you always meet directly at the canyon, usually at the nearest car park. There is no central base, so you go straight to the action while Paul brings all the equipment in his van. After the welcome briefing you get changed, do an equipment check and then head into the canyon together. At the end of the tour you return to the car park, hand back the gear and you are free to enjoy the rest of your day.

Is canyoning suitable for a bachelor party?

Yes. Canyoning is ideal for a bachelor party if you prefer action over a bar crawl. For mixed groups, Level 1 is often the best choice, while very sporty groups can also go for Level 2 or 3. More ideas and details for your bachelor party can be found here.

Is canyoning suitable for a marriage proposal?

Yes. A proposal out in nature, right after a jump or at a quiet spot in the canyon, is something truly special. If you are planning this, you should let Paul know in advance. He can build in a suitable moment and, if possible, take photos or a short video of it.

Can we include something special for a birthday?

Absolutely. Whether it is a small birthday gadget in the canyon, a special photo or a dedicated “happy birthday” moment – you can discuss these ideas with Paul in advance. He will tell you what is realistically possible and help you make it happen.

Adventures don’t happen in your living room – that’s just where you tell the stories.
