Canyoning in September: Is this the secret sweet spot?
The summer crowds are gone. The canyons are quieter. And the landscape is slowly turning golden.
This September canyoning guide answers your questions about water temperature, weather, equipment and choosing the right tour—with the added bonus that last-minute bookings are often still possible.
Can I still go Canyoning in September in Salzburg? (Yes and Here’s Why It’s Great)
1. Summer crowds are gone
July and August are peak holiday months in Salzburg. By September, schools in Austria and neighbouring Germany are starting to open up.
Most larger canyoning providers reduce their schedules or finish their season during September. Paul continues guiding throughout the month. With fewer tours in the gorge, you may even have it entirely to yourselves.
2. Last-minute canyoning
A July weekend can fill up weeks or even months in advance. September is usually much more flexible.
Want to go tomorrow or the day after? Paul can often make it work. That gives you the freedom to add a spontaneous adventure to your Salzburg holiday without missing out.
3. Golden Canyon Experience
In midsummer, the Salzburg landscape is green everywhere and that is beautiful.
But in September, the first leaves begin to change colour and the late-afternoon light turns warmer and softer. Inside the canyon, the mix of golden light, colourful leaves, dark rock and emerald water can feel magical.
FAQs about Canyoning Salzburg in September
Isn’t the water freezing in September?
Alpine water is never a heated swimming pool. That is why the right equipment matters (a thick neoprene wetsuit, neoprene socks etc.)
If the air feels a little crisper than usual, Paul can add extra thermal items such as gloves or a neoprene cap when needed. With the right equipment you won’t notice much of a difference between an August and September tour.
Can children still go canyoning in September?
The short answer is yes. The Almbachklamm (Level 1) is the family-friendly choice and is generally suitable from age nine. Around two hours in the canyon gives you plenty of adventure without committing to a long day in cold water.
Do I need prior experience or higher fitness for September tours?
Not at all if you pick Level 1 (Almbachklamm). It remains completely beginner- and family-friendly throughout September (even October!). You actually get an even more relaxed pace than during the busy summer months.
What if it rains in the canyon?
A little rain does not automatically cancel canyoning. You are going to get wet anyway. What matters is the water level and whether thunderstorms or heavy rainfall could make the canyon unsafe. Paul checks the local conditions and will change, postpone or cancel a tour if needed.
The best Canyoning Salzburg Tours in September
| Location | Best for | Tour details | September fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Almbachklamm Level 1 | Beginners, families, and first-timers | Around 2 hours, optional jumps, slides, and rappelling alternatives | Best all-round choice Shorter and easier to match to children or anyone who gets cold quickly. |
| Strubklamm Level 2 | Fit, confident swimmers who love jumping | A much longer tour with extended swimming sections and plenty of jumps | Great for very sporty and fit groups with good cold tolerance, as it's a long 4-hour tour with lots of swimming. |
| Fischbachklamm Level 3 | Fit adventurers who are comfortable with heights | High and wild waterfalls, serious rappelling, and rewarding Bluntautal views | Great in September when it's less busy and gives us the flexibility to pick the ideal date, as this tour is more weather-dependent. |
